MTG Basics Empty
PostSubject: MTG Basics   MTG Basics EmptySun Aug 14, 2016 8:04 pm

So I know there are several of us here that play MTG. Personally I want to see the MTG section grow.

I will help teach any active EF member how to play MTG. My preferred medium for playing MTG online is Cockatrice.

Cockatrice is a free application available for download where all the cards are provided for free. Cockatrice is updated regularly and has a good administrative team. There is also a website that I have been a member of for several years now that hosts events through Cockatrice including an event that is free to enter with a cash prize for first place hosted once every two weeks.

Here is the link to the download of Cockatrice: https://cockatrice.github.io

Here is the server information for registering an account to the woogerworks server to play with others on Cockatrice:

http://www.woogerworks.com/offered-services.html

email verification is required so use a valid email when registering.

The site I mentioned that runs regular events on Cockatrice: http://www.magic-league.com

There is a calender of events there. The calender can be altered according to your chosen time zone setting once you make an account. Accounts are primarily used to register for and report scores in events hosted by the site. There are also many events held randomly throughout each day through Magic-league.

So here is some basic links for learning MTG:

Basic Rules: http://magic.wizards.com/en/game-info/gameplay/how-to-play

Basic Deck Construction Guidelines: http://magic.wizards.com/en/game-info/gameplay/how-to-build-a-deck

Different Formats of the Game:

http://magic.wizards.com/en/game-info/gameplay/rules-and-formats/formats

Banned lists and included sets in each format are listed on their respective links.

Standard is one of the most popular competitive formats but it has a set rotation

Modern is the most popular competitive format without a set rotation and is the format I recommend for newer players who wish to build a collection and play IRL mainly because it is not a rotating format and has many viable budget decks largely due in part to its wide card pool.

Commander also known as EDH is a really fun format that is mainly played casually as a multiplayer free for all game.
Commander can be played 1 vs 1 and there are many different options for deck building given the extremely diverse card pool the format offers. Decks have a wide range of competitive effectively and goals. This format is perfect for those that wish to build themed decks.

Here is the official database of all cards in the game of Magic: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Default.aspx

There are both Simple and Advanced search options. By using the Advanced option you can filter cards by set as well as many other parameters. This is perfect for researching different aspects of the card pool of each format.

There are many different abilities in MTG and many different directions of play in which you can go. I look forward to playing with you all and teaching those of you that I can.

for commander the color identity rules cover all mana symbols in the card. For a card like Memnarch which is colorless but has an ability that has a blue symbol you may use blue in the deck or likewise for a card like Shu Yun you would be allowed to run Jeskai colors since his ability is R/W hybrid mana to use.

TL;DR yes. you may use black in the deck if black is in the ability on the legendary you chose to be your commander.
